The protests began in June against the quotas that assign positions in the public administration to relatives of veterans of Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971. Many argue that this system favors the Awami League, the party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the one she led. the independence movement. The Supreme Court reduced these quotas from 30 to 5% but the student protests did not stop, indeed they became anti-government and also involved other social groups. Although the economy has grown tremendously under Hasina's leadership over the last 15 years, it has not translated into jobs for graduates, who are often forced to emigrate. After violently repressing the protests with hundreds of deaths, Hasina resigned, fled to India and handed over power to the army which will now form an interim government.
